Pet Sitting 101

This is how I lived in one of the most expensive countries in the world for $0...

When you want to see the world sometimes you need to get creative when the money starts to run looowwww. So, here is a step by step guide on how to secure a pet sitting job (as a first-timer) in Australia.

#1: Are you a pet lover?

This isn't for everyone, you actually need to love animals if you want to do this. Someone is trusting you with their furry friend and it's important that you're excited to take on the responsibility!

#2: Plan in advance!

If this is your only option for accommodations while staying in Australia I recommend looking for pet-sitting jobs 1-2 months in advance to ensure you find a place to stay.

#3: How?

Aussie House Sitters is an Australian site that allows you to post ads as House Sitters, but also apply to jobs. There are also many Facebook groups you can join but we used this site and loved it.

#4: Buy your membership

A yearly membership on the site costs approx. $89. This makes it worth it even if you only get a pet-sitting job for two nights since most hostels in Australia cost around $75 per night. Once you buy your membership you're good to go.

#5: Start applying!

Now that you're a member you will need to set up your profile and start applying to jobs. You can filter by location, timing and type of pets you're comfortable taking care of. Make sure you make your profile personable and have some photos/past experience of pet setting. You might not have a reference because this is your first time so don't be discouraged if it takes a little longer to get a job.

#6: Accept the job

Now that you have a job you're ready to travel! Make sure you have your tourist Visa and everything ready to go based on the country you're coming from.

I hope this was helpful and inspires you to pet sit! It is such an amazing way to see the world on a budget and make some furry friends.
