48 Hours in Melbourne & the Great Ocean Road: A Budget-Friendly Adventure

When you're back to the corporate grind but still itching to explore, packing all the fun into a short, affordable weekend is key. Here's how we managed an amazing 48-hour city-and-nature escape from Sydney to Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road—for just $150 roundtrip!

Getting There

We found an incredible flight deal to Avalon Airport, about an hour outside Melbourne. With the convenient SkyBus, we went straight into the city. This itinerary maximized our time and minimized costs, making it the perfect quick getaway!

Thursday Night: Arrival

We flew out after work, so no extra vacation days were needed—just Friday off!

Friday: Melbourne’s Vibrant City Life

Morning:

  • Lune Croissanterie: Start your day with Melbourne’s famous croissants. Even as a non-croissant lover, I’d go back a million times! We got a savoury and sweet!

  • Exploring CBD: Wander the Central Business District, sipping on Melbourne’s top-notch coffee while discovering graffiti alley and Chinatown.

Afternoon:

  • Brunswick: This eclectic area is a treasure trove of vintage shops, funky coffee spots, and quirky beer gardens.
  • South Yarra: Shop ‘til you drop in this chic neighborhood, reminiscent of Toronto’s Yorkville, with fabulous boutiques and vibrant streets.

Evening:

  • Fitzroy: The ultimate spot for dinner and drinks. We hopped between five different bars and restaurants, soaking in the lively, eclectic vibe.

Saturday: The Great Ocean Road Adventure

Morning:

  • Brunch in Fitzroy to fuel up while exploring Saturday’s vintage markets and curated shops.

  • Took the SkyBus back to Avalon Airport to pick up our rental car—though we ended up with a hilariously branded work truck instead of the black pickup we’d expected.

Afternoon:

  • Castle Cove Lookout: Our first stop on the Great Ocean Road. The views of cliffs and beaches here were absolutely surreal.

  • Pebble Point Glamping: Our accommodation was a dream. Nestled in nature, it felt private and luxurious, complete with a cozy BBQ area for dinner under the stars.

Sunday: Beach-Hopping & Iconic Landmarks

We made the most of our last day before catching a late-night flight home.

Morning:

  • Sunrise at Pebble Point: Watching the sun rise from bed with the tent doors open was magical.

  • Port Campbell: Grabbed coffee in this charming small town—it felt like something out of a Hallmark movie.
  • Childers Cove: Had this stunning beach all to ourselves for swimming and relaxing. A true hidden gem!

Afternoon:

  • The Grotto & Twelve Apostles: Both iconic stops, with the Grotto’s unique water reflections and the dramatic beauty of the Apostles. Note that the Apostles gets really busy and touristy.

  • Johanna Beach: Watched surfers ride the massive waves and enjoyed a peaceful walk along the shore.
  • Apollo Bay: Stopped for a delicious lunch before continuing our adventure.
  • Separation Creek & Cumberland River Beach: Two incredible spots to swim and unwind, with fewer crowds and jaw-dropping coastal views.

Evening:

  • Made our way back to Avalon Airport and flew home, feeling like we’d been on two vacations in one.
