Most Backpacker Friendly Countries

Choosing Your First Backpacking Adventure? Here’s Where to Start…

If you’re a first-time backpacker wondering where to kick off your adventure, you're in the right place. After spending six months backpacking through Southeast Asia, I’ve gathered a bunch of advice to help you get started. Before we dive in, I want to point out that while these countries may not be my absolute favourites from my travels, they are  the best for those looking to ease into the backpacking lifestyle. I know it might sound odd to suggest "getting some practice," but any backpacker will tell you that it takes time to adjust to new cultures, transport systems, and ways of life. That's why I found Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia to be the perfect places to hone your skills.

Why These Countries Are Great for First-Time Backpackers:

1. Well-Established Backpacker Routes:
All three countries—Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia—have developed and well-traveled backpacker routes. Because these destinations have been popular with travellers for so long, getting from place to place is a breeze. You’ll find plenty of fellow backpackers following similar itineraries, making it easy to make new friends and share tips along the way.

2. Delicious (and Diverse) Food Options:
When you're far from home, food can sometimes be a challenge, but not in these countries! Thailand and Indonesia both have a wide range of Westernized food options, so you won’t go hungry if you're craving familiar flavours. Vietnam, on the other hand, is famous for its incredible local cuisine, but you'll also find plenty of simple, comforting dishes if you're feeling hesitant about diving straight into street food.

3. Plenty of Organized Tours and Group Options:
If you're feeling a bit nervous about going solo, don’t worry! These countries are home to numerous well-established tourist agencies offering organized tours and group trips. These can be a great way to ease into backpacking before venturing out on your own.

4. Friendly Locals and English Speakers:
The people you’ll meet in these countries are some of the warmest and most welcoming you’ll find anywhere. Plus, many tour guides and locals speak excellent English, so the language barrier won’t be as daunting as you might think.

So, How Do You Choose?

If you're juggling the decision between Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, here's a quick guide to help you decide which one aligns best with your travel style:

Vietnam: Perfect for the adventurous foodie who’s eager to immerse themselves in a vibrant, bustling culture. With its rich history, diverse landscapes, and endless activities, Vietnam is a great pick if you're looking for something exciting and full of variety.

Thailand: If you're after a laid-back beach holiday with the added bonus of unforgettable snorkelling and lively party scenes, Thailand should be at the top of your list. You’ll find a balance of relaxation and adventure, all in one place.

Indonesia: For those who want to do "boujee on a budget," enjoy a spa day, or catch some waves, Indonesia is a fantastic choice. The blend of luxury and affordability, alongside its stunning beaches and surf spots, makes it an ideal destination for relaxation and adventure.

Each of these destinations offers its own unique experiences, but they all provide a perfect entry point into the world of backpacking. Wherever you go, you're sure to have an unforgettable experience!
