What makes the perfect travel buddy?

Picking who you travel with can be stressful, and not to be dramatic, but I am telling you that the person you pick could make or break your trip. Every traveler I have interviewed so far consistently mentions that it is crucial to pick the right travel buddy.

So let's play red flag, green flag so you can see if you have chosen the right person.

You have the same budget.

GREEN FLAG! If you don't have the same budget as someone while traveling, it can make it hard to make the smallest decisions. One of you might be ready to book a five-star hotel while the other is prepared to stay in bunk beds for the trip. Make sure to sit down and chat about budgets before planning your trip.

You don't like doing the same activities.

RED FLAG. There is so much to do when you're backpacking, and it can be a little overwhelming at times. It will make life much easier if you enjoy doing similar things. However, if you know ahead of time that you have different interests and you're willing to be independent, you will be set up for success.

You have never traveled together.

RED FLAG.* This has an asterisk beside it because I know it's not possible to test out every travel buddy with a trip. But what you can do is spend a whole weekend together, whether that's a sleepover or a little staycation. See how it goes and make this your test run, because when you start traveling, you will be spending 24/7 with them.

They go with the flow.

GREEN FLAG! I promise that things will not always go your way while backpacking. You will need to change your plans and manage your expectations along the way, so having someone who can keep the energy levels up and go with the flow will always be helpful!

Picky eater.

RED FLAG. I will admit this one hits home for me. I love food and am always on the hunt to try new cuisines and dishes in new countries, so I would struggle with having someone traveling with me who was not willing to branch out.

These are just some pieces of advice I have, but you always know best. Just remember, it's not always going to be easy, so thank your friend for coming on the adventure of a lifetime with you, and the two of you will always share some of the best memories you make. Happy travels!
